History

Today’s RBC Bank is the product of more than 30 mergers and acquisitions since its founding in 1990. After beginning as a "merger of equals" between two regional bank holding companies with a combined century-long heritage, we’ve grown to become a leading regional bank over the past two decades.

November 1990	Peoples Bancorp and Planters Corp. form Centura Banks, Inc. in Rocky Mount, NC
September 1991	Centura acquired Watauga Savings and Loan Association, Inc. in Boone, NC
December 1991	Acquired Citizens Federal Savings and Loan in Rutherfordton, NC
March 1992	Acquired First Federal Savings Association in Raleigh, NC
January 1993	Acquired Orange Federal Savings Bank in Chapel Hill, NC
April 1993	Acquired Brevard Federal Savings and Loan Association in Brevard, NC
July 1993	Acquired Granite Savings Bank in Granite Falls, NC

February 1999	Acquired Scotland Savings Bank in Laurinburg, NC
March 1999	Increased presence in Virginia with the acquisition of First Coastal Bank in Virginia Beach, VA
February 2000	Acquired Triangle Bancorp in Raleigh, NC and Bank of Mecklenburg in Charlotte, NC
June 2001	Centura Banks is acquired by Royal Bank of Canada; holding company renamed “RBC Centura Banks, Inc.” and banking subsidiary renamed “RBC Centura”; Kel Landis III named CEO of RBC Centura Banks, Inc.
July 2002	Expanded into Georgia with the acquisition of Eagle Bancshares
January 2003	Opened in the Florida market with the acquisition of Admiralty Bancorp
November 2003	Expanded presence in Florida with purchase of the operations of Provident Financial Group
October 2004	Scott Custer named CEO of RBC Centura
October 2006	Broke ground on new headquarters in Raleigh named RBC Plaza
December 2006	Acquired Flag Financial
March 2007	Expanded into Alabama with the acquisition of 39 AmSouth branches
Feb 2008	Acquired the Alabama National BanCorporation
April 2008	RBC Centura changes its name to RBC Bank
